Hopefuly #5 is lucky

I just ordered my 5th Sony Ericsson T68i. Yummy. Like 3 of the others, my current unit has decided it doesn’t want to hop onto the network even though there is service. I could have opted to get the Sony Ericsson T610 instead, but the upgrade price was $299. Ha. Nice try T-Mobile. I know my rights.

My contract ends in December, but for a few reasons I want to stick with T-Mobile (unlimited GPRS for example). I’m currently looking for possible phones, but the playing field is pretty damn small. I need Bluetooth (due to said unlimited GPRS) which weeds out almost everything. The way I see it, it comes down to the Sony Ericsson T610, Motorola V600 or the Nokia 3660 (am I missing something?). I haven’t had much luck with my current Sony Ericsson which makes me nervous about the T610, the V600 hasn’t been approved by the FCC which is a pretty major glitch, and the Nokia 3660 is a brick. Ugh.

  1. That T610 is starting to look might attractive! And T-Mobile has unlimited GPRS? Yet another reason I need to get the hell out of Nextel!

It costs $19.99 a month I believe, but it’s a hell of a deal. Especially with Bluetooth… You can link up your PowerBook with the phone and get online at decent (little better than dial up) speeds anywhere.

You wouldn’t want to download much, but for email/IM it will rock. I haven’t signed up yet as I don’t have a PB yet :P.

Any thoughts on the Sony Ericcson Z600? It was well received over at MobileBurn… though I don’t know exactly when it will be on sale

Heh. Thanks, but I already knew. One of the benefits of running a pretty popular mobile phone site is knowing what’s up. Still a hard call when it’s your own phone though :P.

Whoops! Forgot to address the thoughts part. I am not a big fan of flip phones, but the bigger problem is that it’s not slated for a US release. AKA, it will cost a ton.

I changed my T68i to T610 and pretty much satisfied with it — the GUI is much more responsive, and overall it feels quite right. Now only if it had no built-in camera, which is absolutely useless in my opinion… 😉

I’ve been thinking about ditching my Sidekick for a T610. But what bothers me is that I’ve read a few articles that say that the US version of the T610 is the T616, which has improved firmware with better reception. So why isn’t TM selling the T616, like AT&T is?

Not surprised you already knew about the Z600, just wondering why it wasn’t mentioned (and with 3 mobile phone sites in NetNewsWire, it’s easy to lose track of what’s coming from where 🙂

Didn’t know about the whole “not slated for a US release” part. Bummer.

With the V600 (damn naming schemes) being a flip phone, I figured I’d ask about the SE offering… and since I’m hoping to jump to a Bluetooth phone when my contract expires in July, I wouldn’t mind piggy-backing off your research!

Rob: The T610 is a world phone (you can use it anywhere else in the world where GSM is available). The T616 is made for a few US GSM networks that are special to the US (GSM 800 to be exact). Long story short, T-Mobile is the only national US GSM provider that has GSM 900, which the rest of the world uses.

Eric: The only reason I would go for the V600 is that it is advanced. A lot more so than the Z600. I don’t like flips, but could make an exception for the V600.

Cool. I haven’t looked too in depth at the SE and Moto offerings since I have several months to decide, but I hadn’t completely picked up on the gap between the V600 and Z600.

Since you have too many cellphones already, please consider donating one to me. ;P

Thanks Jon. FYI to all, the T610 is currently free after rebate at Amazon.
