New router

Got a new LinkSys wireless router today to replace a really bad D-Link. If you’re ever tempted to get a D-Link wireless router because it’s $30, remember that it’s $30. After about 20 feet it just starts laughing at you. It has internet access. You wish you had internet access.

The LinkSys I got (model number BEFW11S4) is highly recommended. I’m sitting outside on the opposite end of the Gales compound. The D-Link thought going through semi-gloss was an accomplishment. The best part was the new router cost me just $59. Beautiful.

    I’m using a D-Link DI-624 (4 ethernet ports + 802.11g cable/DSL router).

With the latest firmware, 1.25, it’s rock solid. With the 1.24 firmware, I had LOTS of trouble. It would suddenly start rebooting itself continuously until I powered it down for a few minutes.

I also have a LinkSys BEFSR41 sitting around unused (I used to use it with my old Graphite base station before it died). The LinkSys worked flawlessly for many years.

There are a few things I prefer about the D-Link (aside from the company’s more Mac-friendly attitude). It has a built-in dyndns client to automatically update my dynamic domain name whenever my IP address changes. It also lets me assign static DHCP addresses to different machines, so my powerbook will always be 192.168.0.100, etc.

I should point out that both of these routers are 802.11B. I have heard good things about the D-Link 802.11G. The routing functions were fine, it was just the range that sucked beyong belief.

D-Link was an ass when I lived in a biger place ’cause it doesn’t reach my bedroom. Now it’s being a super ass that even the neighbors can steal my internet connection. If I were to use a LinkSys, I would’ve already provided free internet to the whole building! 😛
