PowerBook silver finish coming off
My 15″ 1.25Ghz Aluminum PowerBook is shedding silver to a minor degree. Where my hands rest on the area before the keyboard is looking spotty. Anyone else having this problem? I have used it everyday for almost a year, I suppose these sort of things happen. I’m wondering if AppleCare will be able to fix this (I need to send it in for the white spots problem anyway)…

Same thing is happening with my Powerbook. I read somewhere it is a reaction between the sweat from your hands and the alum. in the Powerbook.
You can use Conceal ( http://www.buyconceal.com/ ), from the makers of TiPaint. Conceal is color coded to match the aluminum color (where as TiPaint matches the TiBook’s color). Because this is from the makes of TiPaint, I highly recommend that you buy it through a third-party store like WeLoveMacs ( http://www.welovemacs.com/tiscrconclr.html ), since TiPaint has a horrible history of never sending products.
This same thing is happening with my 12″ PowerBook G4 which I received in late February 2003. I use it everyday for probably 5 hours per day or more. I have these same noticably visible spots on both sides of the trackpad where I lay my palms.
Thanks James for the Al paint recommendation, I believe I’ll be giving that a try since I am not as fortunate as Mr. Jon Gales who has AppleCare to whine to 🙂

I have had this same problem with my PowerBook, but I can personally tell you to NOT buy the Aluminum “Conceal” paint. The paint does not match the finish on an aluminum Powerbook whatsoever. In fact, it makes the scratches and “divots” much more noticeable.
Apple replaced my case at no charge, after the warranty. Same thing happend to my most recent Powerbook 1.5, 15″ G4. So, call Apple, and demand replaacement. Peace.
