Poll: Coolest US area code

Filed under: Personal | 86 Comments

Quick poll here: What’s the coolest US area code and why (the city is cool, it flows, adds up to a prime number, etc…)? Looking for a lot of responses here as everyone has a favorite. The winner gets the satisfaction of knowing they picked my new area code (with that on the table, how can you resist?!).

it’s got to be 212 … NY … the big apple … the best city in the world! home of jazz, central park, soho, times square, great restaurants, subways, the yankees, pizza, grand central station, the empire state building, greenwich village, i could go on & on but i won’t …

  2. Steve Miller says:

    Home of Jazz and Pizza?

  3. Jon Gales says:

Jazz and pizza didn’t originate out of NYC, but have flourished for sure. 212 is high on the list for sure. Keep ’em coming.

  4. My vote’s for 415, San Francisco. The city of San Francisco has been buying up old classic street cars from other cities and refurbishing them and putting them into public action here. How cool is that?

  5. Adelyn says:

    212 all the way, baby.

  6. Lee Bennett says:

    269.

    Think about it. 😉

This is totally unrelated but seemed like a good place to share something I realized a while ago regarding a sequence (er, almost) of area codes. I get so confused:

402 Nebraska – location of one of my best friends and former college roommate.

403 Alberta – location of another of my best friends

404 Georgia – location of an affiliate to my office that I call frequently

406 Montana – location of a graphic designer friend who used to live in Orlando

407 Florida – home of yours truly

408 California – well, I thought this area code was where another friend of mine from college used to live, but I was wrong. It is, however, not far away from where she lived–south end of the bay area instead of the north end.

  7. MacManX says:

    800, of course. 1-800-jon-knee

  8. Jon Gales says:

Sorry Lee, I have no idea what 269 means… 🙁 Must be a generational thing. heh.

  9. Brian says:

Hey, what happened to 405? Oklahoma is OK, right?

  10. Michael says:

Do you guys know the story of 321 as told by the Cheshire Catalyst? I actually met him once. And at one time at least his phone number was 543-8633.

  11. 303 (Colorado) isn’t bad. It’s symmetrical.

  12. Dave says:

The area of Florida where the launches happen has 3-2-1 as its area code.

  13. The Countodwn Capitol of the World (Cape Canaveral) has the Area Code 3-2-1 – and it’s MY fault. I asked the Public Service Commission for it, they approved it, so it must be MY area code, right? But I share. As was mentioned before (with the numbers), my cell phone number is 3-2-1 LIFTOFF (321-543-8633). If THAT’S not cool, I don’t know what is.   :-)>

  14. Evan Williams says:

614 all the way baby (Columbus, Ohio)

  15. Chazz says:

303 (COLO) Is where it’s at for sure!

  16. Rob M says:

No doubt the best area code in the entire United States is 310. The 310 area code is home of the “South Bay” of Southern California. Home to the top three cities to live in, in California – Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach. Oh, and also old downtown Torrance rocks too. Oh and if you’re a rich snob we can throw in Palos Verdes, and if you’re a thug or a long shoreman, include San Pedro as well. And a host of other localities under the FAMOUS AREA CODE. :-p

  17. twilighter says:

713,281,832. The coolest area codes ever! All from the one and only H-TOWN, TX! they’ve even got the cool ring to them.

  18. Mikesurfer says:

It’s 213, then 323, then 310. No doubt about it. Central Los Angeles (213) where cool was invented, Hollywood (323) and the westside (310) including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu, etc…

  19. gp says:

    808
    hawaii
The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was one of the first programmable drum machines.
Referenced in all kinds of hip hop songs for the bass line. Coolest? Come on.
    808

  20. Niggering Negro says:

Pretty sure it’s 187. Does no one listen to any early 90’s gangster rap?

“187 with my nuts in yo mouth.”

    • Jay says:

187 is California police penal code jargon. Meaning MURDER. No area code is allowed to start with a 1.

      415 FRISCO

    • NoRCaL says:

187 is police penal code radio jargon. It means “murder”. There is no area code that starts with 1

  21. Phillip says:

Area codes are the stupidest things to be proud of. Think about it.

  22. Milo says:

The answer is easy: 321 (Space coast, Florida)
I think no other area code is related to its area as this one which represents the countdown before launching rockets into the space!!

  23. vic says:

    Red sox baby

  24. kate says:

    956 babeeh.. We the best..Texas

  26. Mr. Motown says:

248 — The area code for Detroit Michigan. 313 was the original area code for Detroit, but since the last official inhabitant left Detroit for Oakland County several months ago, I have to go with 248.

  27. ellie m. says:

gotta be the 305!!! it’s the Miami area code!!! 🙂

  28. Duane says:

714 – The OC. Most of the comments I’ve seen here are very old school. Orange County California is West Coast, home of Surf City USA and the Orange County housewives, movie stars, and MMA champions. It dwarfs the 310.

  29. etarget says:

305, Miami, South Beach… without a doubt the most rapped about

    • Jack says:

425 is outside of Seattle, dumb ass.
206 is Seattle. Which is nice but 808 is still the best area code in the U.S. of A.

And I grew up in Seattle.

  32. Ion Todirel says:

this is too easy, 206 well of course, Seattle!

    601(Mississippi)
    662(Mississippi)
    843(South Carolina)
    404(Atlanta)
Why are they the coolest? B/c it’s the places I’ve lived, therefore it’s familiar to me..
However, I know that isn’t the point of this so.. Outside of that, I think 321,303 and 917

512 Austin TX! Live music capital of the world

    • Eli says:

Sadly Austin is only the live music capital of the world in advertisements and when SXSW is in town, or if you have never been anywhere else. Shit, San Antonio has a stronger live music scene than Austin… as does a large portion of the US.

  47. sam says:

  64. Dan Vignau says:

The winner for best area code has to be 865 in East Tennessee, home of the VOL’s. 865 is VOL on keypads.

  65. Robert Penuel says:

    904 Duval County, Jacksonville Fl

  66. Armando says:

This page has been up for 15 year when are you gonna celebrate 863 for the Florida boys

  67. Ashlee says:

Was the question what is the area code where you live? Or whT is the coolest are code?
Most answer seem to be about when people are from & there is nothing cool about their are codes. I figured it would be one that is easy to remember or has a pattern having nothing to do with the location. It represents. Am I looking at the question wrong possibly to deep?

  68. Laule'a Haina says:

    Brah, 808 Hawaii the best!
