Big race in Iowa Monday

Filed under: News | 8 Comments

I’m not a Democrat. But I’m going to keep a close eye on the Iowa caucus tomorrow. Why? It’s a tie. Who will win? Not Sharpton. Not Clark. Pretty much anyone else.

Some real dirt has come out on Dean and Kerry. Both love to show off pancake skills [Dean | Kerry]. If the race was up to flap jacks, Dean takes it.

I’d personally like to see Wes Clark win the DNC bid. He’s a crazy. Dean is too, but I’d like to see his email list cry before the election. By the way, Clark does breakfast too.

Update: Wow. Dean even paid his wife to come out to Iowa for a few hours. He’s serious about the election.

Anyone from Tampa? [updated]

I’d like to talk with any readers that live in Tampa, Florida in the next few days. I’m gearing up to launch a Tampa themed site, and would like some testers/advice. It’s going to launch as a forum, so you really have to be in Tampa to help out. Either comment on this post or hit up the email at testers AT tampa411.com.

Although I don’t plan on paying everyone that responds, if you give some great feedback you’ll be hooked up. And everyone will have a really hot pre-launch registration date.

Update: Alright. Ready to give it some Google juice. Tampa 411 is a forum for people living the Tampa Bay area. Enjoy.

What happened to whois on Google?

Filed under: Links | 1 Comment

Earlier this week (the 7th to be accurate) Google added a feature where you could search for a domain preceded by the whois operator to get a link to the WHOIS info for that domain. An example would be “whois typepad.com”. Easy. Handy even.

Today it’s gone. What happened? I suspect ICANN is to blame, but that’s just a hunch.

Covering keynotes is a blast

Filed under: Apple | 2 Comments

Everytime I cover a big Apple event, it’s great times. I wish I could do it every week. It’s one of the most intense 3 hours a single person can spend on a laptop. Not only was I typing nearly the entire time, I was getting IMs all over the place and checking the server load to make sure it wouldn’t start smoking. Fun times. Even the Register liked it :).

Of course we weren’t the only one covering the show, but I think ours was some of the best. Not only did we have up to the minute (and I mean it!) posts, we had pictures and a nifty highlights column that was handy for people joining in the middle. On top of all that, we had several AIM chat rooms bumping.

We’re on Mars, Comets [Updated]

Filed under: Infatuation | 3 Comments

I never stop being amazed at what our brightest minds accomplish. It just goes to show what democracy can do for mankind. While other countries suffer mass death from minor Earthquakes, we are exploring space.

Last night I watched in awe as a craft we put up in space (a feat in its own right) 5 years ago played catch with comet dust. The dust was going 6x the speed of a bullet, and was caught in one of the most amazing materials ever, aerogel. It’s 99.8% air, but can take the abuse of space and a trip back to Utah. You can even get it on eBay.

Tonight we landed a very heavy robot on Mars. To get a sense of the mission, watch this. The Egyptians have nothing on us for building the pyramids.

Last week, the EU’s Mars rover crashed and burned. At least they can download the images from nasa.gov like the rest of us. 🙂

Update: Here are the raw photos our Mars rover has sent back so far. They will only get better (color, hi-res and stereo) from here.

Police protecting New York City

Stay safe. Leave your bio terror weapons at home, or with the designated driver. Many more pictures of security this holiday follow on the extended page. If you know a public safety professional, send them something nice. They deserve it.

Almanacs, Beef and other contraband

Why not celebrate the new year with a 2004 almanac* and a steak? Sounds good to me. Make that 2 steaks. One for me and one for Japan.

Stocks going nuts

If you haven’t seen the markets lately, they are really going crazy. The NASDAQ is back over 2,000. The Dow has 10,500 in its sights. I’m even the proud owner of a little XM (I should really sign up now). Good times all around. But I’m just one of those bulls :).

Brian of MacMerc fame has moved his blog to a real domain name and put everything through a re-design. It’s pretty clear he’s going for the simple look, not unlike what I have here. He put a lot more time in it than I did from the looks of it, and it paid off. Now I look lazy.

If you don’t subscribe to his XML feed, you should.

George Bush caused mad cow [updated]

It looks like George Bush caused mad cow disease*… (Postscript: he made a dedicated page on the Bush link. Heh.)Tisk tisk. But on a more serious note, don’t eat the brain or the spinal tissue of cows and you’ll be just fine. That won’t cramp my style. I’m just glad I am not into any food stocks/futures. Eek.

Update: Would like to point out that while this is the big end-of-the-world story, with vegans dancing in the streets, thousands of people died in the UK due to a few day cold snap. Less than 200 have died worldwide BSE tainted meat. Ever. Now, continue to freak out.

Update: And now 20,000 – 40,000 have died from a minor (California’s quake the other day was 2x as powerful) earthquake in Iran. I say we get together and vote this “natural disaster” guy out of office.
